Within the context of depressed patients with suicidal behavior disorder (SBD), the control exerted by dopamine (DA) and thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) on the hypothalamic-prolactin axis activity remains relatively unexplored.
In 50 medication-free euthyroid DSM-5 major depressed inpatients with sleep-related breathing disorder (SBD) – 22 currently experiencing the condition and 28 in early remission – and 18 healthy hospitalized controls (HCs), we evaluated prolactin (PRL) responses to apomorphine (APO), a dopamine direct receptor agonist, and protirelin (TRH) tests at 0800 and 2300 hours.
The baseline PRL levels demonstrated a similar trend across the three diagnostic groups. Subjects with SBD in early remission showed no differences in PRL suppression to APO (PRLs) or PRL responses to 0800h and 2300h TRH tests (PRLs), or in PRL levels (calculated from the difference between 2300h-PRL and 0800h-PRL values) when compared to healthy controls. Current SBD patients displayed significantly lower Prolactin Receptor Ligands (PRLs) and PRL values compared to both Healthy Controls and those in early remission SBD. Empirical evidence indicates that acute stress can either improve or diminish an individual's ability to manage their emotions (ER). Moreover, beyond sexual activity, strategic applications, and the intensity of stimulation, the timing of the erotic response task relative to the stressor's onset may also modulate the outcome. Although a slightly delayed increase in the stress hormone cortisol has been shown to improve emergency room (ER) efficacy, rapid sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activation could impede such progress through disruptions in cognitive function. In this study, we examined the immediate consequences of acute stress on two emotional regulation strategies: reappraisal and distraction. Following a socially evaluated cold-pressor test or a control condition, eighty healthy participants (forty men, forty women) engaged in an emotional regulation paradigm demanding conscious downregulation of emotional responses to high-intensity negative pictures. Emergency room outcomes were measured using subjective ratings and pupil dilation. Successfully inducing acute stress was evidenced by increases in salivary cortisol and cardiovascular activity, mirroring sympathetic nervous system activation. Unexpectedly, a reduction in subjective emotional arousal was observed in men when they were distracted from negative imagery, implying an improvement in regulatory strategies.
